The Nayarit coral snake is a small venomous snake that lives only in western Mexico. It belongs to the coral snake group, whose members have bright red, black and white or yellow rings. Its venom is dangerous, so it is best to keep well away from any coral snake you see.1

  • Red, black and white (or yellow) rings along the body1
  • Black rings are not arranged in groups of three1
  • White or yellow rings are the narrowest, black rings are wider, and red rings are the widest1
  • Small for a coral snake, usually 40 to 50 cm long1
