The starry weever is a sea fish that lives on the seabed, often hidden under sand. It has venomous spines on its gill cover and first back fin, so it can hurt people who step on it or handle it. It lives in the eastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea.1

It is an ambush predator. It stays still in the sand and grabs passing prey of a suitable size with its wide, upward-pointing mouth. Its diet is mostly shrimp and other crustaceans, plus small fish.1
