Its venom contains versutoxin, a neurotoxin (a poison that attacks the nerves) that is very similar to robustoxin from the Sydney funnel-web spider. It causes an autonomic storm, a disruption of the body's automatic systems. Symptoms can start within 15 to 20 minutes and include sweating, local pain at the bite site, fluid in the lungs (pulmonary oedema), high blood pressure, nausea and vomiting.1

One in nine recorded bites by this spider has caused severe symptoms. Females are thought to be more venomous than males, possibly because they inject more venom.1

እንተ ነኺሱ

Apply a pressure bandage in the same way as for a snake bite. This can significantly delay the onset of symptoms and is a critical part of treatment. The bite can be treated with antivenom made for the Sydney funnel-web spider.1
