The rabbit fish is a deep-sea fish with a big head and a long, tapering body. It lives in the north-east Atlantic and the Mediterranean, mostly on muddy seabeds far below the surface. Its spiny back fin can sting, so it is worth knowing what it looks like.1

Males have a club-shaped structure with sharp points on the top of the head, which they use to grip the female's fin during mating.1

Despite its odd look, it shares features with sharks, which are its distant relatives.1

It grows slowly and lives a long time. Males can live to about 30 years and females to about 26.1

Males and females live at different depths, and females live deeper for most of the year.1

Its liver oil is rich in fats, so it has been used to make dietary supplements.1

Its diet changes as it grows, from small crustaceans called amphipods to larger crabs and shrimps.1
