The raft spider is a large spider that lives partly in the water. It is found across north-western and central Europe, mostly in wet heaths and swampy places. It is one of only two Dolomedes spiders found in Europe.1

It eats freshwater invertebrates such as water beetles, pond striders and dragonfly larvae. It hunts on the water surface and detects prey through vibrations in the water. Occasionally it eats small vertebrates such as sticklebacks and small frogs.1

Adults are dark brown with a white, cream or yellow stripe along both sides of the abdomen and thorax.1
Juveniles look similar but often have green translucent legs.1
Females are usually larger than males.1
Hunts on the surface of the water with its front legs outstretched.1

Males signal their presence to the female by using vibrations on her dragline, which may help them avoid being attacked.1
