The blue-winged wasp is a large, black-and-red wasp with wings that shine blue or violet. It lives across the eastern and central United States and into northern Mexico. Its young grow inside the bodies of beetle grubs that live underground.1

Adults are 2.0 to 2.5 cm long.1
The head, thorax and front of the abdomen are black.1
The rear part of the abdomen is red.1
The wings have a violet or bluish shine.1
Males have longer antennae than females.1

常被誤認為： Triscolia ardens is coloured much like the subspecies S. dubia haematodes. The forewing of S. dubia haematodes has two submarginal cells, while Triscolia ardens has three.1
