The broad-ringed coral snake is a venomous snake of the Elapidae family, found in forests in southern Mexico and Guatemala. It is a medium to large coral snake with very wide red bands. It hunts other snakes and caecilians, a group of amphibians.1

  • Banded pattern of red, black and yellow (or white) rings.1
  • The red rings are very wide, 15 to 35 dorsal scales across.1
  • The black rings are 4 to 9 dorsal scales wide and are not arranged in triads (groups of three).1
  • The yellow or white rings are narrow, 1 to 4 dorsal scales wide.1
  • Adults are usually 60 to 90 cm long in total length.1
