The cloud forest coral snake is a small, venomous snake that lives in the mountains of southern Mexico. It is a member of the Elapidae family, the group that includes cobras and coral snakes. It is found in pine-oak forests high above sea level, where it hunts at night and at dusk.1

Its preferred home is pine-oak forest, at heights of 1,585 to 2,256 metres (5,200 to 7,402 feet). It lives on the ground, rather than in trees or water.1

  • Bands of red, yellow and black rings run around its body.1
  • The black rings are not grouped in threes.1
  • Males have 23 to 24 black rings, and females have 26 to 28.1
  • Its red rings have no black-tipped scales.1
  • It is small for its genus. The longest measured specimen was 55.7 cm long, including the tail.1
