The crown cone is a sea snail that lives in warm western Atlantic waters. It is a predator, and its sting can injure or kill people, so it is one to treat with great care. It is known to science for its unusually complex venom.1

  • Shell colour varies, with white, yellow-brown and pale brown forms1
  • Low spire with distinct small bumps (tubercles) and fairly straight sides1
  • Opening (aperture) has a white inside, sometimes with chestnut blotches1
  • Maximum shell length of about 7.5 cm1

Its venom contains a conotoxin called reg2a, which is made of 16 amino acids. It is the most potent known blocker of acetylcholine receptors in the vertebrate brain, a receptor type with a very high affinity for nicotine. The venom also blocks calcium receptors in sensory nerve cells, which stops nerve impulses from travelling along the nerve.1

The crown cone is capable of stinging and injuring or killing humans. Live snails should be handled carefully or not at all.1

如果牠螫人

  • 加壓固定法：用彈性繃帶緊緊包住咬傷處，再往上包住整條手臂或腿，用夾板固定，並讓傷者完全不動，直到救援抵達。
  • 藍環章魚或芋螺會讓人在意識還清醒時就停止呼吸：馬上求救，並準備好做人工呼吸，直到救護人員接手。
