Heteroctenus junceus
名字的由來： Its common name 'blue scorpion' comes from the blue tone on its tail and stinger, and 'red scorpion' comes from its reddish dark body.1

The Cuban blue scorpion, also called the red scorpion, is a scorpion found only in a few parts of the Caribbean and Central America. It lives under rocks and fallen trees and among bromeliad plants. Hundreds of people are stung by it each year in Cuba, but the stings are not considered dangerous.1

  • Adults are 55 to 100 mm (5.5 to 10 cm) long.1
  • The body is yellowish brown, pink or orange, and often reddish or dark.1
  • The tail is red or purple, with a blue tone on the tail and stinger.1
  • The eight legs are darker, in burgundy, purple or blackish shades, with a black triangle between them.1
  • It has a single stinger.1

Its venom has an LD50 of 8.0 mg/kg, which is a measure of toxicity. The amount that would be needed to reach this level is far more than the stinger carries, so a single sting delivers much less than this dose.1

Hundreds of people in Cuba are stung by this scorpion each year. The stings are not dangerous, because the amount of venom in the stinger is far below the LD50 level.1
