Haddon's sea anemone is a large, colourful sea anemone that lives on sandy sea floors in warm waters. It is a host for several kinds of clownfish, which shelter among its tentacles. In Thailand it is also known as a food, even though it is protected there.1

It gets energy in two ways. Symbiotic algae (zooxanthellae) living in its tissues carry out photosynthesis, and its tentacles capture small invertebrates, fry and juvenile fish, immobilising them with toxins.1

  • Its folded oral disc can reach 50–80 cm across.1
  • A tentacle-free area of 1–2 cm surrounds the mouth.1
  • The tentacles are yellowish or tan, with tips that are green, yellow or grey, and rarely blue or pink.1
  • Short and long tentacles alternate around the edge of the disc.1
  • The column is usually the same colour as the body, so its small bumps are hard to see.1

Its tentacles release toxins, such as SHTX, that immobilise small prey like small invertebrates and young fish.1

如果牠螫人

  • 離開水裡，把觸手拿掉（戴手套或用布）。
  • 熱帶箱形水母：在螫傷處倒醋至少 30 秒，求救，並準備好做心肺復甦術（CPR）。藍瓶水母和大多數其他水母：用海水沖洗，再用熱水止痛。

  • 絕對不要碰、抓或捉弄野生動物，就算是很小的動物，就算牠看起來在睡覺或已經死了也一樣。
  • 給牠空間。如果遇到了，保持冷靜，慢慢往後退，讓牠自己離開。
  • 如果被牠螫了：保持冷靜，保持不動，打緊急電話（112、000、911）或趕快去醫院。記住牠的樣子，有照片會很有幫助。

It is home to six species of clownfish, including the Saddleback and Clark's anemonefish.1

On islands such as Ko Samui and Ko Pha-ngan, it is used in a seasonal dish called Kaeng kua, even though it is a protected animal in Thailand.1
