The Hentz striped scorpion is a bark scorpion that lives in the southeastern United States. It often hides under logs, stones and bark, and it sometimes turns up in houses. Its sting is painful, but it does not usually cause lasting harm.1

Southeastern USA: Florida, south-west Alabama and coastal southern Georgia. Also found in North and South Carolina through accidental introduction.1

It lives under logs, stones, tree snags and leaf litter. It also hides under bark on standing dead trees, up to about 6 metres high, and at the base of pine trees. It is a common invader of houses and other buildings.1

  • Light mottled brown body with lines spreading out from a yellow stripe down the middle of the back.1
  • Claws and legs marked with brown marbling, while the underside of the legs is pale and unmarked.1
  • Males are slimmer, with long tail segments. Females are larger, with short, rounded tail segments.1
  • Adults are about 3.7 cm (males) to 3.9 cm (females) in length.1

Its venom is used mainly for defence and for catching prey. The venom differs between populations, and between males and females. After use, it takes at least 14 days to regenerate.1
