The Panamanian black scorpion is a scorpion that lives in Central and South America. It is one of the most dangerous scorpions in the region, and it is responsible for many serious stings, including ones in children. It hunts at night.1

  • The fourth and fifth segments of its tail section are dark and thicker than the others.1

Its venom is considered one of the most toxic of any scorpion. Stings can cause a fast heart rate, sweating, fast breathing, blue-tinged skin, high blood pressure and, in some cases, a slow heart rate. Severe cases can lead to heart problems, cardiac arrest and fluid in the lungs (pulmonary edema). In laboratory measurements, the median lethal dose is 4.8 mg per kg.1

It is responsible for the most serious scorpion accidents in Central America and Colombia, including in children. In Colombia it causes the highest percentage of scorpion sting admissions to hospital. One reported case involved a 12-year-old boy whose pain at the sting site quickly progressed to heart and circulation failure.1
