The Peruvian black scorpion is a dark brown to black scorpion found in South America, where it is known to live in Peru. Its venom is strong enough to cause serious symptoms, so it should be left alone. It hides during the day and is mainly active at night.1

  • Dark brown to black, especially on its feet (tarsi) and tail segments1
  • The tips of its pincer fingers and the top plates of its body are somewhat lighter1
  • Younger scorpions are more yellowish and mottled in colour1
  • Adults are 60 to 75 mm (6 to 7.5 cm) long1

Its venom is mainly made of excitatory neurotoxins, which attack the nerves and make them overactive. Local symptoms can include swelling (oedema), pain at the sting and paraesthesia (tingling or prickling). Wider symptoms can include vomiting, heavy sweating, drooling, breathing problems, a fast heartbeat and abdominal pain. A lab measure of venom strength (LD50) is 4.14 mg/kg.1

This species is significantly venomous, but it is relatively non-aggressive towards people.1

When threatened, it will flee or react very quickly. Juveniles are more nervous than adults.1
