Stewart's coral snake is a small, brightly banded venomous snake that lives in the forests of Panama. It is a New World coral snake, a group of snakes known for their red, black and sometimes yellow rings. It is one of the snakes you should recognise and leave alone.1

  • Its colour pattern uses only red and black rings, with no yellow or white rings.1
  • The black rings are usually unequal in width, alternating between wider and narrower bands.1
  • It has 13 to 25 black rings along its body.1
  • Adults usually measure 50 to 70 cm in total length, including the tail.1
