The Tuxtlan coral snake is a small venomous snake with bold red and black rings. It lives in eastern Mexico, in the state of Veracruz. Its bright colours warn that it is dangerous, so it is worth knowing how to recognise it.1

Its preferred habitat is forest, at elevations of 160 to 1,050 metres. It has also been found in disturbed and artificial places such as agricultural areas. It lives on the ground.1

  • Adults are usually 40 to 55 cm long, including the tail.1
  • Its body has alternating red and black rings.1
  • It has no yellow or white rings.1
  • In the subspecies M. l. spilosomus, the black rings are reduced to black spots on the back. The spots are oval or round.1
