The twin-spotted rattlesnake is a small venomous snake that lives among rocky mountains in the south-western United States and northern Mexico. It is a pit viper, a group of snakes that use heat-sensing pits to find their prey. No bites to people from this snake have been recorded.1

  • Ground colour is grey, bluish-grey, brownish-grey, or medium to reddish-brown, usually with fine brown speckling1
  • A series of dark blotches runs along the back, often split down the middle to form 39 to 64 pairs1
  • It is a small rattlesnake, usually 50 to 60 cm long including the tail1
  • It has a rattle at the tail end1
