The blue Malayan coral snake is a venomous snake from Southeast Asia. It lives on the forest floor, where it hunts other snakes. Its bright red head and tail and dark blue back make it easy to spot once you know what to look for.1

  • Red head, red tail and red belly.1
  • Back is dark blue or black.1
  • Usually has a large blue or white stripe on each side of the body.1

常被误认为： The pink-headed reed snake (Calamaria schlegeli) is often confused with it, especially when young, because they share habitat and appearance. The reed snake is much smaller, at most 50 cm, and is not venomous. The red-headed krait (Bungarus flaviceps) is also very similar.1

Its venom contains a neurotoxin, which is a venom that attacks the nerves. Calliotoxin causes almost instant paralysis in prey by stopping the prey's sodium channels from switching off properly. This effect has not been seen in humans. The venom also contains phosphodiesterases, which release adenosine and can lower blood pressure and cause inflammation in prey and in bite victims.1

Its venom has only occasionally caused human deaths, but it is potentially lethal. In people, local effects of a bite usually clear up without complications, and serious whole-body effects are rare.1
