The Brazilian jewel tarantula is a small, brightly coloured spider. It lives in the humid rainforest of northeastern Brazil, where it hides in cracks in tree bark behind a trapdoor. It is popular in the exotic pet trade because of its colours.1

  • Both sexes have a greenish front body section (cephalothorax).1
  • The back is black with two rows of six spots: the rear pair is reddish and the rest are yellowish.1
  • It is small. Adult males have a body length of 9.5 to 12.5 mm, and females can reach 21 mm.1
  • It lives in trees and uses a trapdoor to hide in crevices.1
