The burgundy goliath birdeater is a large, heavy-bodied tarantula from tropical South America. It lives in Guyana and Brazil, and it hides in tubes in the ground during the day. It is known for being very defensive when threatened.1

It hides in long tubes that it digs under the ground surface, or in abandoned rodent burrows. It is crepuscular and nocturnal, so it is most active at dusk and at night.1

When threatened it can strike with its fangs as a last resort. Its urticating hairs, which it flicks from its abdomen with its back legs, cause skin irritation and, if inhaled, irritate the nose and throat.1
