The common yellow scorpion is a scorpion from the family Buthidae. It lives in the Middle East, North Africa and southern Europe, mostly in dry, hot places. Its venom is weaker in Europe than in North Africa, where its sting can be fatal.1

It is often found in dry, hot areas with sparse vegetation, where it hides under stones during the day. It has also been reported from Mediterranean forests in Spain at altitudes above 1000 metres, where it snows in winter.1
