The plain sea snake is a venomous snake that lives in the sea. It is a member of the cobra and kraits family, Elapidae. It is found in the South China Sea, around Sri Lanka and in parts of northern Australia.1

  • Back is bluish grey, while the lips, lower sides and belly are white.1
  • Tail is dark bluish grey with three or four narrow white crossbands.1
  • Head is long with a slightly flattened snout, and the large eye sits above the fourth upper lip scale.1
  • Pupil is round.1
  • Body scales are hexagonal (six-sided) with a raised ridge, or keel, down the middle.1
