The purple cone is a sea snail with a cone-shaped shell. It lives in the Pacific Ocean, around the Galapagos Islands and in the Gulf of California. Like other cone snails, it is venomous and can sting people, so it is important to know it is there.1

  • Shell is broad-shouldered, with a fairly rough, ridged top1
  • Shell is clouded with white or violet and brown or olive, with close lines of chestnut and white1
  • Sometimes the middle of the shell has irregular white bands1
  • Colours vary a lot between individuals, but the shape of the shell is quite consistent1
