The striped coral snake is a small, venomous snake that lives only in the hills of the Western Ghats in India. It is a member of the cobra family, Elapidae. Its colours change a lot from one snake to another, which makes it an interesting animal to study.1

  • The head and back of the neck are black.1
  • A yellow band runs along each side of the head, from the top of the head to behind the corner of the mouth. In some snakes this band is broken into spots.1
  • The upper lip is yellow in front of and behind the eye.1
  • The underside is a uniform red.1
  • The colours on the back vary: some snakes have dark purplish brown bodies with black spots, others have black stripes or red-brown bodies with five black stripes.1
