Leopard sea cucumber
The leopard sea cucumber is a soft-bodied sea animal that lives on the seabed. It is found in shallow, warm waters around coral reefs in the Indo-Pacific. It matters because it sweeps sand and food through its body and carries small fish and shrimp that live with it.1

Pearlfish, such as the star pearlfish, sometimes live inside its body cavity, usually entering head-first through the anus.1
In one study in the Banda Islands, 15 star pearlfish were found living inside a single leopard sea cucumber.1
The star pearlfish helps defend its host, fighting off a parasitic pearlfish that can threaten it.1
A compound called Arguside A, extracted from its tissues, appears to be harmful to several types of human tumour cells.1
The emperor shrimp is often found with it and may help keep it free of ectoparasites.1
