Mexican flame knee tarantula
The Mexican flame knee is a tarantula, a large spider with hairy legs. It lives only in the Mexican states of Guerrero and Michoacán. It is special because of the red markings on its knees, which gave it its name, and because it has been found sharing its home with a small frog.1

It has been found living communally with a small frog called Eleutherodactylus occidentalis.1
Even with these trade restrictions, large numbers of wild-caught tarantulas, including Brachypelma species, are still smuggled out of Mexico.1
Scientists did not treat it as a separate species until 1992, because it looks so much like Brachypelma smithi.1
