The Atlantic sea nettle is a jellyfish that lives along the Atlantic coast of the United States. It has a bell-shaped body and stinging tentacles that it uses to catch food and to defend itself. Its sting is painful for people, but it is not strong enough to cause death except through an allergic reaction.1

It feeds mainly on zooplankton, ctenophores, other jellies and sometimes crustaceans. It uses its stinging tentacles to immobilise prey, then moves the food into its gastrovascular cavity, a body cavity used for digestion.1

No anndirto nde

  • Bell-shaped body that is usually semi-transparent1
  • Small white dots and reddish-brown stripes on the bell1
  • Typically pale, pinkish or yellowish, with deeper stripes near the edge of the bell1
  • Bells without stripes look white or opaque1
  • Smaller than the Pacific sea nettle1

Ina jiiɓindiree e: It was often confused with several other Chrysaora species, so older reports of this jellyfish from other parts of the Atlantic and other oceans may be wrong. C. chesapeakei, found in estuaries on the Atlantic coast of the United States and in the Gulf of Mexico, was only recognised as a separate species in 2017. The Atlantic sea nettle is smaller than the Pacific sea nettle and has more variable colouring.1

Each tentacle is covered in thousands of microscopic cells that fire venom-coated stinging filaments on contact. The venom can kill smaller prey or stun predators. In people, the sting most likely causes a painful but non-lethal rash that usually lasts about 20 minutes. Some earlier reported stings in the Philippines caused vascular insufficiency (poor blood flow) and mononeuritis (inflammation of a nerve).1

Its sting is rated from moderate to severe. It is not potent enough to cause human death, except through an allergic reaction. While the sting is not particularly harmful, it can cause moderate discomfort.1

When touched, its tentacles fire venom-coated stinging filaments that stun or deter a perceived predator.1

  • Misting vinegar over the affected area can neutralise the sting. This stops unfired stinging cells from firing and adding to the discomfort.1

Anndal

1

Its body has no excretory or respiratory organs.1

2

Its stinging cells can also entangle or anchor prey, not only inject venom.1

3

Sea turtles, ocean sunfish and larger jellyfish are its main natural predators.1

4

It has a free-swimming stage and a polyp stage, and each reproduces in a different way.1

5

Its body is radially symmetrical, with a single mouth at the centre of one end.1

Fenaande: The Atlantic sea nettle lives in the Atlantic and other oceans around the world.

Goonga: Earlier reports from other oceans were often mistaken, because this jellyfish was confused with other Chrysaora species. It is known from the Atlantic coast of the United States.1
