It eats insects, spiders, lizards, small mammals such as mice, and even other scorpions. It catches prey with its pincers, crushes it, and stings it to inject venom, which paralyses the prey. It can also go for months without food.1

This scorpion uses neurotoxic venom, which is fast acting and is absorbed quickly. Neurotoxins affect the central nervous system and can paralyse the nerves that control breathing, which can lead to death from respiratory failure. Symptoms can include pain, sweating, drooling, tearing, drowsiness, drooping eyelids, loss of muscle coordination, neck muscle paralysis, abdominal pain and increasing weakness.1

Severe envenoming is likely, with an envenoming rate of 10 to 20 percent, making the sting potentially lethal. Death can occur between 5 and 15 hours after envenoming, and it is also possible for death to happen within one hour.1
