Rough-scaled sea snake
ŊatgolThe rough-scaled sea snake is a striped sea snake that lives in the Gulf of Carpentaria, in northern Australia. It was first found in 2000 but was not formally described until 2012. It is venomous enough to be dangerous to people, and it is very rare.1

Humpito
Only 9 rough-scaled sea snakes were found in more than a decade of local sea snake research, while researchers encountered some 10,000 other sea snakes in the same period.1
Divers in the area share the waters with bull sharks, saltwater crocodiles and box jellyfish, which make surveying the area dangerous.1
Its single spine on each scale may help protect it from being knocked against the rocks of its estuary home by waves and currents.1
It has avoided being caught by prawn fishermen because it prefers shallow rocky estuary waters, which are not fished for prawns.1
It was discovered in 2000 but was not formally described until 2012, 12 years later.1
