The species is critically endangered, and fewer than 30 individuals were left in the wild as of March 2022.1
Males compete for females by singing, and each male can attract up to ten females to his burrow one after another.1
Tadpoles hatch while still inside the egg coat, which keeps them protected until the nest floods.1
Adults usually breed only once in their lives, and they reach sexual maturity at four years old.1
Its population fell by up to 80% in the 10 years up to 1989, and a chytrid fungus infection is a major cause of the decline.1
Zoos across four institutions run captive breeding programs, and by 2018 there were over 400 frogs in zoos.1
