Venezuelan fire caterpillar
This is a caterpillar with venomous spines. It lives in South America and is the larva of a large silkworm moth. Its spines can break off in the skin and release venom, so it is one of the more dangerous caterpillars in the region.1

The venom has strong clotting effects. It contains substances that both activate and block the blood's ability to clot. Bleeding can appear late, including bleeding inside the lungs and the brain.1

Humpito
The caterpillar's spines are hollow, and they break on contact with skin.1
The adult moth's wings are shades of pale to medium brown and look like a dead leaf.1
The caterpillars are active at night and gather on trunks or at the base of plants during the day.1
Juvenile caterpillars are light green and darken as they grow older.1
