It is an ambush predator that lies buried with only its eyes exposed. It moves a small strip of skin on its lower jaw to lure prey, then lunges and swallows the prey in less than 30 milliseconds. It mainly eats fish larvae, small fish such as gobies and picarels, and small crustaceans.1

Eziokwu

1

It is one of few fish capable of bioelectrogenesis, which means it can produce electricity.1

2

Its lure is a small strip of skin on its lower jaw, which it moves in and out rapidly to attract prey.1

3

It uses its electric organ to produce discharges when feeding and when disturbed.1

4

All species in its genus, Uranoscopus, have an electric organ that evolved from sonic muscles, but they lack the receptor organ needed to sense electric fields.1

5

It lacks a swimbladder, the gas-filled organ many fish use to control buoyancy.1
