The broad-headed snake is a small to medium-sized venomous snake that lives only in the Sydney Basin in New South Wales, Australia. It is black with yellow markings and is rare today, so it is protected. It is easy to mistake for a young diamond python.1

In the colder months, adults and young shelter in crevices in sandstone outcrops on exposed cliff edges. In spring, adult males and non-breeding females move to nearby woodlands and forests, and they use hollow trees in summer. Its rocky habitat is being lost to urbanisation and to rock removal for landscaping.1

It feeds infrequently on small reptiles and mammals. Juveniles mostly eat Lesueur's velvet gecko and sometimes small skinks, while adults also eat other lizards, small snakes and mice.1
