The desert black snake is a venomous snake from the Middle East. It is found in several countries, including parts of Israel, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Iraq and Egypt. Its venom is strong enough that it is more toxic to mice than two well-known cobras.1

The venom is primarily neurotoxic, meaning it attacks the nerves. Its effects come from toxins that spread through the body in the bloodstream, not mainly from damage at the site of the bite. In tests, the venom was injected under the skin of mice, and it was more toxic to them than the venom of the Indian cobra or the Cape cobra.1
