Caterpillars shelter during the day in silken bag nests on branches, high on trunks, or at the base of their food plant. They feed on acacia (wattle) trees and Grevillea striata (beefwood). In autumn, the mature caterpillars travel in long single-file processions to find places to pupate.1

Adult moths have a woolly appearance and wings up to 5.5 cm across.1
Forewings are dark grey or brown. Hindwings are white, shading to grey at the base.1
Some moths have a pale dot in the centre of each forewing, and some have white lines across the wings.1
The abdomen is banded and ends in a white tuft of hairs.1
