The red-spotted assassin bug is a true bug with a black body and orange or red spots on its wings. It lives in open areas across southern and eastern Africa. It is venomous, and its sting is painful, similar to a hornet's.1

  • Body is black with orange or red spots on the front part of the wings.1
  • Legs are covered with short hair, and each thigh (femur) has a red band across it.1
  • Adults reach about 3.8 to 4 cm long.1
  • Orange and red colour forms look different but share the same body features.1
