The common octopus is a soft-bodied sea animal that is one of the most studied and most intelligent octopus species. It lives on rocky seabeds in shallow coastal waters around the Atlantic, the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. It uses venom to catch its prey.1

It eats crabs, lobsters and bivalve molluscs such as cockles, but will eat almost anything it can catch. It uses its beak to break into the shells of shelled molluscs.1
