Blade fire coral
Blade fire coral is a fire coral, a colony of tiny animals that builds a hard skeleton. It lives in shallow waters of the Caribbean Sea. Touching it with bare skin can cause a severe sting, so it is best to keep your distance.1

Dintlha
Its stinging cells can fire and inject venom into prey in just three milliseconds.1
Blade fire coral is one of the first coral species to recolonise damaged reefs.1
Broken pieces of its blades can reattach to the seabed and survive.1
In a 1998 Caribbean bleaching event, many colonies died, but many blade fire corals recovered and regained their colour within a few months.1
Its tissues contain tiny algae called zooxanthellane, which provide much of the carbon the coral needs.1
It feeds during both day and night but mostly at night.1
