The Madagascar leaf-nosed snake is a medium-sized tree-dwelling snake that lives only on the island of Madagascar. It is very hard to spot because its shape and colours blend in with the plants around it. It is not venomous and is generally calm.1

It mainly eats frogs and lizards, including both tree-dwelling and ground-dwelling lizards. It is a sit-and-wait predator, so it waits still for prey to come close, sometimes hooding and swaying as it stalks.1

Dintlha

1

Its snout is a leaf-shaped or pointed appendage whose function is unknown, though it also helps the snake blend in as camouflage.1

2

Males and females look very different, a feature called sexual dimorphism, and this species is known for having an unusually high level of it.1

3

Its swaying and hooding, along with its camouflage, may let it look like a vine moving in the wind.1

4

It often hangs straight down from a branch when resting, which is an unusual resting behaviour.1
