Striped poison-fang blenny
Ho lomaThe striped poison-fang blenny is a small, stout fish from the western Pacific Ocean. It has large fangs in its lower jaw and a venom that scientists are studying as a possible new painkiller for people. It sometimes turns up in the aquarium trade.1

The venom targets the body's opioid receptors, which are the sites in the body that pain-relieving chemicals act on. It contains a neuropeptide also found in cone snail venom, a lipase similar to one in some scorpion venoms, and an opioid peptide. The venom lowers the blood pressure of a predator, which relaxes its jaws so the blenny can escape.1

Dintlha
The venom is being investigated as a potential new painkiller for human use.1
Blennies use their venom to stun predators, lowering the predator's blood pressure so it lets go and the blenny can escape.1
In mice, the venom did not cause pain, which is unusual, because most fish venoms are painful.1
The fish's fangs protrude from the lower jaw, which is unusual for a fish.1
The venom contains a neuropeptide that is also found in cone snail venom.1
The venom also contains a lipase similar to one used by certain scorpion species.1
