Records also list osteomyelitis, eye inflammation (ophthalmia) and more severe allergic reactions. In horses, eating the caterpillars may cause pregnant mares to abort.1

When disturbed, caterpillars curl up into a tight bunch, and their loose hairs can be carried away on the wind.1

The final caterpillar stage carries more than two million urticating hairs (setae).1
A procession can contain a hundred or more caterpillars, each one holding onto the tail hairs of the one in front.1
Caterpillars follow silk trails left by others, and if two meet on each other's trails they can walk in a circle, sometimes forming a large circular mass.1
Females cover their eggs with scales from the tuft at the end of their abdomen to protect them from predators.1
The whole life cycle takes one year, and the caterpillars live together as a group from egg to pre-pupa.1
