Dwyer's snake
Dwyer's snake is a small, shy, venomous snake that lives only in Australia. It hunts small lizards at night and hides under rocks and leaf litter during the day. Its bite is considered weakly venomous, but it still deserves respect.1

Dwyer's snake has hollow fangs at the front of the upper jaw. These fangs connect through ducts to venom glands near the eyes. Herpetologists at the Queensland Museum describe its venom as weakly venomous.1

When threatened, it prefers to coil into a tight ball, which protects its head and other vulnerable parts of its body from larger predators.1

When it is threatened, it coils into a tight ball to protect its head.1
One bite victim found that a fang had been left in his finger after the snake struck.1
Despite being closely related to Australian sea snakes, Dwyer's snake lives on land.1
Like most Australian elapids (a family of venomous snakes), it is shy and inoffensive.1
It is active at night, which is why it is described as nocturnal.1
