The European garden spider is a large orb-weaver that spins round webs. It is native to Europe and was introduced to North America. Its white markings form a clear cross on its back, which is why it is easy to spot in the right place.1

It waits in its web for insects to blunder into it. When prey arrives, the spider wraps it quickly in silk and bites it. Uneaten prey may be left hanging on the web for later.1

1

Females sometimes eat the male directly after mating.1

2

The cross-shaped markings are formed in cells filled with guanine, a by-product of protein metabolism.1

3

Spiders also prey on each other, but only just before, during or after mating. Their size, mating experience and hunger affect whether they attack.1
