The purple-striped jelly is a jellyfish with a bell marked by purple stripes. It lives off the coast of California, and scientists study it closely because so little is known about how it feeds. Its sting is extremely painful to people, though stings are rare.1

E ja eng?
It feeds on zooplankton, including copepods, larval fish, ctenophores, salps, other jellies, and fish eggs. When prey touches a marginal tentacle, stingers fire to paralyse it, and the tentacle bends in towards the nearest oral arm, which carries the prey to the stomach cavity.1

Young Cancer crabs make their home in the jellyfish and eat the parasitic amphipods that feed on it and damage it.1

2

Leatherback turtles are the main predator of this jellyfish, which they favour because its four oral arms are rich in carbon and nitrogen.1

3

A specimen about 15 feet (4.5 m) long has been reported.1

4

It is more active in lively currents, which helps it move and catch prey.1
