Magical cone
The magical cone is a sea snail with a cone-shaped shell. It is venomous, so it can sting people, and it lives in warm seas across the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Its venom has produced a powerful painkiller that is used in medicine.1

Ni ngay ko xàmmee
- The shell is white, clouded with bluish ash, orange-brown, chestnut or chocolate.1
- Narrow chocolate lines encircle the shell, often broken into separate dots.1
- The middle of the body whorl is usually marked irregularly with white.1
- The spire (the upper part of the shell) is tessellated, or patterned like tiles, in chestnut or chocolate.1
- The pattern and shade of colour vary a lot between individuals.1

Xibaar
A painkiller called ziconotide is made from a chemical derived from this snail's toxin. It is about 1000 times as potent as morphine.1
Ziconotide works by blocking calcium channels in pain-carrying nerve cells, so they cannot send pain signals to the brain. It is injected into the spinal fluid.1
The US Food and Drug Administration approved ziconotide in December 2004, under the name Prialt.1
Dr. Baldomero Olivera at the University of Utah discovered the compound that led to ziconotide.1
