The turtle-headed sea snake is a medium-sized sea snake with a short, blunt head. It lives in warm waters around northern Australia and some Pacific islands, including the Loyalty Islands of New Caledonia. It is special because it is the only sea snake known to eat fish eggs, and it has no palatal teeth.1

It lives on coral reefs, including the Great Barrier Reef and the Timor Sea reefs. It is often found hiding among the coral, and snorkellers can see it in protected reef areas such as the New Caledonian Lagoon.1

It feeds only on fish eggs, mainly from demersal fish that attach their eggs to the seabed, such as damselfish, blennies and gobies. It eats small, frequent meals rather than large, infrequent ones. Larger snakes are more likely to eat damselfish eggs, which lie in exposed areas.1

Xibaar

1

It is the only sea snake that does not have palatal teeth.1

2

Its feeding method has been compared to that of a grazing mammal.1

3

Algae growing on the body can slow the snake by up to 20%. Darker, plain snakes collect more algae than paler, patterned ones.1

4

Males find females by sight and by tongue-flicking, because pheromones do not travel well in water.1

5

Females grow larger than males, and males have much rougher scales.1
