Each individual has about 500 million neurons in its body, almost comparable to dogs.1
It has three hearts: one main heart for the body and two smaller branchial hearts, one next to each set of gills.1
It can get about 41% of its oxygen through its skin when at rest.1
Octopuses have been seen collecting marine plants, algae, shells and rocks into 'gardens', which may have inspired the Beatles song 'Octopus' Garden' (1969).1
It was the first invertebrate animal protected by the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 in the UK.1
