The ringed paper wasp is a large, red-and-black wasp that lives across the eastern half of the United States. It builds papery nests under overhangs, often close to rivers and lakes, and many nests are grouped together in big clusters. Its red-faced look is easy to spot once you know what to look for.1

Nests hang from branches of trees and shrubs, and sometimes in sheltered parts of buildings. Large groups of nests are often built on the underside of rocky cliff overhangs close to rivers, where they are shaded for most of the day.1

  • Rust-red head and thorax (the middle part of the body)1
  • Mostly black abdomen with a single, prominent yellow ring at the end of the first segment1
  • Bright orange tips on the antennae (feelers)1
  • Narrow first abdominal segment1
  • Males and females both have red faces, which is unusual among North American paper wasps1

A sábà máa ń ṣì í mọ̀ sí: Darker P. bahamensis lacks the yellow markings on its mesopleuron (side of the middle body) and has less yellow on its mesosoma. Metricus and darker forms of P. fuscatus have no contrasting orange antennal tips and a wider first abdominal segment.1

Òtítọ́

1

Unlike many related species, it is fairly tough in winter, and it stores concentrated nectar as a kind of honey before hibernating.1

2

Its colours closely match those of P. metricus, which lives in much the same area, so the two look alike to predators.1

3

Several females can share one nest, with up to 22 cooperating foundresses recorded in a single group.1

4

A single nest can hold around 500 cells, far more than the nests of many other paper wasps in its genus.1
