The Karoo button spider is a venomous spider that lives only in South Africa. It belongs to the same group as the black widow spiders. Its bite causes very unpleasant symptoms, so it is worth knowing about if you live in or visit its range.1

It lives in dark corners in a variety of small habitats, where it builds its three-dimensional webs. It has been found at altitudes from 648 to 1358 metres above sea level, in the Fynbos and Nama Karoo biomes.1

  • The web has loose, interconnected threads that lead to a tightly woven retreat.1
  • Its retreat is inverted and cup-shaped, with pebbles built into the dome.1

常被誤認為： Four of the six Latrodectus species found in southern Africa are known as black button or black widow spiders, so common names alone cannot tell them apart. Its distinctive web and pebble-domed retreat help to recognise this species.1

Like all Latrodectus species, it has a neurotoxic venom, which attacks the nerves. The venom acts on nerve endings and causes latrodectism, a condition with very unpleasant symptoms.1
