Kipling's jumping spider
Kipling's jumping spider is a colourful jumping spider that lives in Central America, including Mexico, Costa Rica and Guatemala. Unlike most spiders, it gets most of its food from plants, mainly small nutrient-rich nubs that grow on acacia trees.1

- Males have amber legs, a dark greenish-topped front section and a slender reddish abdomen with green lines across it.1
- Females have sturdier amber front legs and light yellow back legs.1
- Females have a reddish-brown front section with a black top near the front.1
- Females have a large light brown abdomen with dark brown and greenish markings.1

Its diet is mostly plants, more strongly plant-based than that of any other known omnivorous spider.1
Populations of several hundred spiders have been found on single acacia trees in Mexico, with more than twice as many females as males.1
Its genus is one of four named after characters from Kipling's stories, along with Akela, Messua and Nagaina.1
Only the male was described in 1896, and the female was not described until 100 years later, by Wayne Maddison.1
It appears to breed throughout the year.1
